Review of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - Brushes with Death
It's been more than three months since the release of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - not enough that many players probably still have a long way to go to finish the game, and enough for those who saw the story's finale to yearn for Henry's new adventures in medieval Bohemia. The appetite is whetted by the fact that the additions to the previous installment were far more creative than simply pasting in a few new quests. They introduced, for example, interesting mechanics for rebuilding a village or allowed us to look at events from a completely different angle when we took on the role of Theresa.Something you've made up here Wojciech.... So come on, paint my shield.... For free, and a lot of funThis time, however, Warhorse studio adopted a slightly different tactic. We're paying for a single “content package,” which, a couple of months apart, will include three expansions. The first of these, called Brushes with Death, is thus only 1/3 of the total, and in this form it evokes somewhat mixed feelings. It is simply a series of several side quests, which on the one hand are interesting and well-written, and on the other - they bring practically nothing new to the game and look like mere content cut from the base. Something you've made up here Wojciech.... You get access to the side story To Whom Death Painted after completing the quest To Whom the Bell Tolls. A marker of the place where we first meet painter Adalbert will then appear on the map with Trosky Castle. After a few quests, we move to the town of Kuttenberg and the next couple of quests already take place on the second map. Probably this was the deliberate intention of the creators, because in the dialogue scenes our protagonist complains to Wojciech that, like what: he has to go somewhere again, get something done, and in return he will receive lies and vague explanations? And the painter himself at one point asks Henrik: "Why do you seem to be helping me with everything? What for?". And therein lies the essence of the whole story, the potential of which, in my opinion, was completely missed.Wojciech is a very mysterious and at the same time interesting character. He's constantly hiding something from us, lying and stalling. The story is hooked on occultism, paganism themes, and you could really make a total brainteaser out of it, or a reference to a cult theme from a certain “B” game, and then there would be no end to the divagations and discussions online about what, who, why, how and why. So come on, paint my shield.... After completing the story, which, depending on the level of character development, shouldn't take more than 3-5 hours, we'll be left with a few pieces of new, unique equipment - and that's enough about it so as not to spoil. The only novelty previously unknown in KCD is the long-announced shield painting - a service provided to us by Wojciech. For this purpose, a clear and easy-to-use shield editor has appeared in the game, where we choose colors and patterns from predefined themes. It's just that the most said about this feature is the paid DLC available for some time now with a bunch of patterns. For completed quests we will receive a considerable number of such motifs for decoration, so there is no point in paying extra for them. Besides - we can see our shield from the front, with a custom motif, only in photo mode and on the inventory screen. So, in my opinion, it's such an “attraction” for more or less 2 minutes of fun - I checked, chose a design, took a photo and that's it. There is a bigger impact on the game if you change your hairstyle - after all, Henry's head is seen in cutscenes much more often than his shield. For free, and a lot of fun For these reasons, during my brief return to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, I had the most fun with the novelties of version 1.3, the add-ons that everyone will receive for free. Horse racing and horse archery competitions appeared in the game world. A big plus for the fact that this is not a simple addition of an icon in the game world firing off a new activity, but again - a long and complex quest that involves us interacting with new side characters, while explaining all the rules and allowing us to practice both challenges.The races are distinguished by the fact that the checkpoints are very far from each other, and it's only up to us which way we get there - overlaying the roads with a route or taking a shortcut, but risking breaking through terrain obstacles. However, you can cheat a little here and stick to the peloton, focusing only on the condition of the horse, especially since even on the highest of the three difficulty levels the opponents are not very fast. On the other hand, the competition with a bow or crossbow is quite different, because here the challenge is already really big. We have a time limit in which to fit in, and the most difficult tracks still contain obstacles over which the horse must jump. On them you can't turn on the steed's “autopilot” and you have to concentrate on both riding and shooting - and hitting the target while rocking in the saddle is even more difficult than usual. In any case, the challenge is big, engaging and gives a lot of satisfaction with each accurate shot.

STALKER 2 has received a massive 1.4 update
The patch makes fire exchanges more difficult, making it easier for malicious mutants to feast on the corpses of the unlucky. Patch 1.4 is another major update to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, breathing some life into Zona. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has received a massive update 1.4. GSC Game World studio has released a long list of changes in a post you can read on Steam. The new patch includes such important changes as solving the problem of bloody steamers and shot ducks flying into the water. Jokes aside (albeit actual improvements highlighted by the Ukrainian developer), version 1.4 brings other important changes to the “second” STALKER. The developers have made a number of fixes related to missions, including “non-interactive” or non-conversational NPCs, closed or blocking quests (including those from merchants). There was also no shortage of gameplay balance modifications. More (in)human enemies Nevertheless, further improvements to the living world of Heart of Chornobyl, including the behavior of other stalkers and mutants, should be considered the most important changes. The latter will finally feed on (in)fresh corpses and may become alert as a result of nearby events or approaching objects or creatures. More “normal” faces have also been added for humans to reduce clone invasions. The developers have also improved the behavior of Zona's human inhabitants. They now use trees as cover, and hiding is accompanied by better animations. Moreover, enemies communicate in combat and make better use of both grenades and melee tools, as well as flanking and kicking crouching enemies. For balance, the use of shotguns like sniper rifles by some people has been curbed. Similarly, the behavior of mutants, both in and out of combat, has been improved. Patch 1.4 is rounded out by technical fixes (better facial animations and sound effects) and further improvements to the game's optimization, as well as the user interface (including improved display of weapon stats in inventory and the addition of key character “stats” in the trade menu).

It's been a while since I first saw Roadcraft in action (more than six months since Gamescom 2024, actually), and I can't hide the fact that with each passing week I felt more and more eager to see what Saber Interactive were creating behind the scenes. And now the time has come, the game is great, I'll describe its highlights, and I'll also show you how to download Roadcraft for free. In the article:In the beginning there was chaos... Roadcraft is not just about building roads The simulation layer is very large Graphically, it looks really good! Roadcraft system requirementsThe idea of the game is quite noble, not only as something new in the formula, but also as an experimental field, at least for the terrain destruction system in the new version of the engine. This is a very ambitious project, and one that marks a completely new development path for the developers and subsequent simulation projects after the brilliantly received (and surprisingly still being developed with successive seasons) Snowrunner. In the beginning there was chaos... One thing you should know before playing the demo version of Roadcraft is that there are three missions of varying complexity to choose from, and although there are tutorial elements, the feeling is that it would be much better to learn the game from the beginning and gradually. It turns out that the first mission, which is supposed to be the easier one, can be a bit more difficult than the second or third. It all depends on understanding the operation of individual machines, beyond the traditional scout car familiar from Snowrunners or Mudrunners, and at least the woodcutter. So if you can't figure out how to tame a particular mechanic, it's worth restarting your progress on the map or starting with something else. That said, they're all within everyone's reach, and there's more than one way to do them. After all, you don't have to toe the only right party line... do you? Roadcraft is not just about building roads Now that we've got the introduction out of the way, a few words about what goes with what in Roadcraft. The most important thing to know is this: although the game's title suggests that it is a simulator for an employee of the General Directorate of National Roads and Highways, it is in fact a whole host of different tasks that need to be carried out in order to repair the damage caused by various elements. What's more, these elements keep showing up, whether it's heavy rain or sandstorms. Do they have a significant effect on the destruction of the terrain? I haven't noticed that, although it would be pretty hardcore (and fun) if the terrain was even more difficult to work on after the rainfall on the destroyed terrain. However, what I wrote above remains in the realm of dreams, because whatever else we may say, this new model of terrain layering and its effect on the capabilities of different types of machines can make driving them quite a challenge. After all, for some reason vehicles carrying heavy equipment have been introduced here, as there is no way we can easily drive a roller through a section where there is no asphalt. It's also easy to forget to lower the bulldozer's shovel... and tear up a few metres of asphalt. The simulation layer is very large In other words, whereas in Snowrunner, Mudrunner or Expeditions we had several types of machines for essentially the same type of game, in Roadcraft this variety is greater and combined with the renewal of machines, the construction of tracks with given resources, it becomes more of a simulation game with many different economic elements, which fans of additional management should probably like. And it's for this reason that I see this as an excellent starting point for cooperative play, as the previously announced up to four-player cross-play means that all this variety of machines and tasks can offer more room for teamwork than in previous Saber games. After all, it's much easier to imagine two friends building a road, another transporting equipment to another end of the map, and a fourth clearing paths for resource convoys. There's something for everyone. Graphically, it looks really good! While playing on native settings under Ultra is quite demanding, the mix of Ultra with DLSS in performance mode and 4K enabled actually made it safe to say that it could be native settings after all. On the other hand, we also ran the game on a laptop several years old with an RTX 3050 Ti and AMD Ryzen 5 5600H, but here we had to make more serious concessions with DLSS support. At the end of the day, it should laugh. The desert map doesn't quite do justice to the engine's capabilities, so the map associated with the clearing of the forest, combined with the occasional rain, will make it hard to look at previous games in the same way. They will still be nice games, but this level will probably be hard to relate to. After a short mission, we are immediately thrown into the lion's mouth, represented by gangsters, social outcasts and people willing to sell their own mother. The gameplay in The Presinct feels almost like a cop simulator What should interest sandbox fans is the cross-section of activities in the game. The reality of a policeman's work will be well integrated into the gameplay, and the developers will illustrate the daily duties and dangers of the job. When The Precinct launches, we will be able to issue fines, check parking meters, patrol the streets on foot, tow cars, search for suspects, chase criminals and deal with them using firearms and hand-to-hand combat - leading them to arrest or, as a last resort, to death. It is said that missions will never repeat during the game, which is guaranteed by procedurally generated crime scenarios. It's worth noting that the game involves shooting and using cover, as well as ambushing hostages. Police activities Separately, the theme of pursuits should be developed. The game implements a menu of options to support the pursuit of criminals, consisting of the use of a turnpike, summoning support, blocking the road and pursuit from a helicopter. To use these, you need tokens, which you earn by staying close to the fugitive. Each action is tightly coupled with a collision system to make the gameplay impressive and as realistic as possible. The game's isometric camera, in particular, evokes an old-school vibe, while the dark atmosphere also evokes memories of the long-forgotten GTA II, which was unique in the series for its bleak setting. Of course, there are many more related elements. We have familiar solutions from the interface, such as a circular radar with a section of the map on the left, mission markers. We will also notice a system of destruction of the environment, freedom to explore the city and, despite the police environment, the possibility of committing misdemeanours, only in the name of justice - it is not fully said whether we can kill passers-by and devastate the city with impunity, and possibly what penalties await for deviations from morality. Our actions and choices will determine the fate of Dolski and his alters. Gameplay of The Alters The gameplay in The Alters is based on two pillars. The first is a stay in a mobile base that we observe from the side, like in This War of Mine or Fallout Shelter. While there, John must perform his duties, and most of the time he needs the help of his clones. We create alternate versions of the protagonist in a powerful organic sphere called The Womb. In creating alternate versions of John, we make choices that not only shape their past (until they land on the planet), but also project their personality, skills, and advantages and potential disadvantages. The key to success is to create alters that meet our current needs or effectively fill the "personnel" gaps. Different aspects of the game But that's not all: while staying in this huge command center, John will have to take care of the relationships with his alters (who will also interact with each other, e.g. by getting into fights), as well as gradually expand the structure by adding more modules - from the kitchen to the bedrooms to the laboratory and other useful rooms. For the latter, however, we need raw materials - this is where the second pillar of fun comes into play. The Alters allows us to explore the surface of an inhospitable planet. Viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP), we traverse atmospheric locations and collect valuable resources. At the same time, it is worth remembering that access to some places is limited by, among other things, high radiation, so to replenish supplies we often have to work hard and face unexpected challenges. Technical issues The Alters runs on Unreal Engine 5 technology and makes good use of it. We like the models and character animations as well as the design of the locations, especially the interior of our base. The replayability of the scenarios is ensured by procedurally generated maps, and thanks to the built-in editor, we will develop new places for waging wars ourselves. Build a strong group In Soulmask, the role of the protagonist is played by the entire community around us - this allows us to take control of our fellow tribesmen and develop them in different directions. We get specialists in hunting, stealth, or heavily armed warriors. They are the ones who will face wild animals, hostile civilizations, and bosses with unique attributes. No less important are experts in leatherworking, farming, gathering resources (wood, stones, minerals, etc.), or breeding animals (including mounts). Unconquered fortress Many of the activities available in the game take place in our village, which we gradually expand. We build defensive walls, set traps, create sleeping and working areas, and set up production chains. In this way, we make the tribe's headquarters both a self-sufficient place and a difficult place for enemies to raid.
